Sabal sp. Defuniak 1 Gallon For Sale

This variety is from Defuniak Springs Florida where a odd palm was found growing. Many people have speculated about what exactly it is, saying it looks like a Sabal bermudana. It resembles a Sabal louisiana but on some major steroids. They trunk like a palmetto and they grow quite fast for a sabal palm, the leaves are similar to a sabal minor and has longer flower stalks than typical palmetto. Defuniak may be a hybrid but that is currently unknown. They're also relatively hardy. We have 2 planted out and after a few winters of experience I'd say they're similar in hardiness to a more hardy variety of sabal palmetto. If they are damaged, they quickly recover from what minor damage they have had so far. These two are only a few years old and just becoming established palms with no protection. I would rate these as zone 8a possibly 7b hardy, until more testing is done. The plants I'm selling are from the one and only tree collected by another palm enthusiast, which is the last palm pictured. I have a limited number of these available. We ship our plants bare root but wrap the roots very well to reduce shock and maintain moisture within the root ball, sometimes we remove loose soil especially on sabals since most of the roots are at the bottom of the container rather than the top.
