Copperplate engraving by Ephraim Gottlieb Krüger (1756-1834) titled \"La Mort de Clorinde\" from Torquato Tasso’s epic poem Delivered Jerusalem. Folio size with full margins, frame size is 23 x 21.5”, visible art 13 x 11.5”. This engraving depicts the Saracen warrior Clorinda who lies dying an accidental death at the hands of her Christian lover, Tancred, who didn’t recognize her wearing her armor and in the darkness. Before she dies though, she is baptized. Beautiful subject matter, excellent condition throughout. Signed in plate lower left “Canaro, pinx”, lower right “E.G. Krüger sculp”. Not examined out of frame.Ephraim Gottlieb Krüger (1756-1834) was a German engraver and professor at the Dresden Academy of Art. At the age of eleven, he began his studies at the Dresden Art Academy, which had been founded just a few years earlier. The Academy\'s first director, Charles Hutin, taught him drawing, as did the Italian painter and draftsman Giovanni Battista Casanova. He learned the art of engraving from the Italian Giuseppe Camerata (1718–1803), engraver for the Saxon court, later a professor at the Academy.
Known for his detailed engravings of religious subjects, his works often depict scenes from the Bible, such as the \"Madonna and Child\" and “Nativity”. He provided illustrations for Friedrich Christian Schlenkert\'s novels as well as for the \"Moral Picture Bible\" by Kaspar Friedrich Lossius and his \"Historical Picture Gallery\". His work was very popular and he contributed to the illustrations of many other books of his time. Krüger\'s engravings were highly sought after during his lifetime and are still admired for their meticulous detail and skillful rendering of light and shadow.
