Samuel Woolley Taylor (1907 to 1997) was born in Provo, the son of apostle John W. Taylor, who left the Quorum of the Twelve over plural marriage after the Manifesto, and grandson of third church president John Taylor. He grew up among thirty five siblings, studied journalism at BYU, and built a national career writing for the Saturday Evening Post, Collier\'s, and Esquire. His Liberty magazine story \"A Situation of Gravity\" became The Absent-Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, and Flubber. Often called the Mark Twain of Mormondom, he also wrote Family Kingdom, Nightfall at Nauvoo, and The Kingdom or Nothing.

Rocky Mountain Empire opens in 1890 and follows the church as it abandoned plural marriage under federal pressure, won statehood for Utah, survived the Reed Smoot Senate fight, and grew into a formidable business enterprise. Book Two, \"Happy Valley,\" turns to Provo and BYU, with chapters on Benjamin Cluff\'s expedition to Central America in search of the Nephites, coach Eugene L. Roberts, and Bishop John H. Koyle\'s Dream Mine. Kirkus called it a dissenting history from one unconstrained Mormon at large, and that independent voice is its appeal. Includes bibliography and index.

This copy is signed in ink on the front flyleaf \"Samuel W Taylor, with best wishes.\" The same leaf carries a private library blind stamp reading \"Library of ... Pearson\" around a scales of justice emblem, plus neat pencil bookseller notations in the upper corner marking the book out of print, dated 4/23/84, and priced at 18.50. Bound in brown linen textured cloth with bright silver spine lettering giving title, author, and Macmillan. The dust jacket shows the Salt Lake Temple spires with a bronze statue in the foreground, the title block in tan on dark brown.
