This rare 1973 screenprint by Robert Whitman is in museum-quality condition, having been archivally stored since its original publication over 50 years ago. It has never been exposed to light or mounted in any way.
A pioneering figure in American contemporary art, Robert Whitman was instrumental in redefining artistic practice through his innovative use of time, performance, projection, and installation. He was a key member of the Happenings movement of the early 1960s, collaborating with Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, Allan Kaprow, and Red Grooms to push the boundaries of theater, sculpture, and media.
Whitman’s landmark performance American Moon (1960) exemplified his interdisciplinary approach, combining live action with light, sound, and set design to immerse viewers in a unique sensory environment. In 2023, Pace Gallery recreated the original set and restaged this iconic work, affirming Whitman’s lasting influence.
