The F-35A Lightning II is a fifth-generation, stealth multi-role fighter aircraft developed by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Air Force. It combines next-generation characteristics of radar-evading stealth, supersonic speed and fighter agility with the most powerful and comprehensive integrated sensor package of any fighter aircraft in history. The 187th Fighter Wing, based at Dannelly Field in Montgomery, Alabama, is a unit of the Alabama Air National Guard. Historically flying the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the wing is transitioning to the F-35A Lightning II. The 187th is recognized for its role in both domestic operations and overseas deployments, and it continues a proud legacy, including its connection to the Tuskegee Airmen heritage.
