The copyright page states 1849, reflecting the original registration of the work. Representative Men was first published in book form in 1850. The particular imprint in this copy includes James C. Derby of New York, unlike the earliest 1850 first-printing title page, so I would describe this conservatively as an early 1850s edition rather than a first edition. The first edition is bibliographically recorded as Phillips, Sampson, Boston, 1850, 285 pages.
Original dark cloth binding with blind-stamped decoration. This is a well-worn antique copy with substantial rubbing, fading and soiling to the boards; heavy wear and fraying at the corners and spine ends; and visible deterioration/separation along the spine/joint areas. Previous-owner notation “1849” appears on the preliminary page. Interior pages show age toning and scattered spotting.
