Hippeastrum calyptratus is an interesting bulb from the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil at elevations around 1000-1500 m. It grows as both a terrestrial and an epiphyte, and this species can be cultivated successfully in a plastic or clay pot with a peat-based potting mix, in an open basket with loose chunks of potting medium, or mounted on a solid mount that allows room for the roots to spread out and yet retains moisture via moss or other mounting medium.

Hippeastrum calyptratus seems to grow well under intermediate conditions and moderately bright light. Regular water and fertilizer should be provided when the plant is actively growing and reduced when they are not in active growth.

Hippeastrum calyptratus starts going into dormancy late summer and then stops its dormancy and awakens in mid- to late autumn (typically around October or November), driven by dropping temperatures and its natural schedule as a late-autumn bloomer. You should investigate how much water it will want even during dormancy if you intend to grow it mounted in the house.
