This preamplifier and its related pre and tuner were built as a joint agreement with Harman Kardon back in the mid to late 1980s with this being essentially identical to the highly regarded HK-825 Preamplifier. Indeed, this is quite impressive on many levels not the least of which is first rate construction with an attention to solid build quality. In addition, with the legendaryDr. Matti Otalaat the helm of design, this pre follows heavily in the HK traditions of ultra-wide bandwidth with low phase shift and minimal negative response to provide the most transparent presentation possible. The approach pays off with amazing sound that is truly smooth and open from top to bottom with no grain to speak of. The class A operation only further enhances these qualities.
While I’ve always been a performance first kind of guy, I have to admit this does have a great feature set. Let’s begin with the fact that this has an excellent phono section that not only offers selectable loading but also switching for low output MC and MM cartridges. In addition to the usual features you’d expect, this also has great bass and treble controls. The curves are not to heavy handed for subtle adjustments while the turnover options provide great flexibility in terms of tonal control. A nice addition is the defeat switch which will remove the whole circuit for the most pure signal path.
All told, this is a wonderful preamp that combines wonderful European styling with top notch performance in true HK tradition. This is completely checked out and is working perfectly in all respects.
