Rare vintage Dorothy C. Thorpe, Inc. sculptural candlesticks from the Mid-Century Modern era.This unusual matched pair features an organic palm tree / flower-form design handmade from translucent pink-salmon polyester resin with metal candle cups. Both candlesticks retain their original Dorothy C. Thorpe, Inc. paper labels, which specifically identify the material as polyester resin.Each measures approximately 9.5 inches tall.About Dorothy Thorpe:
Dorothy C. Thorpe (1901–1989) was an influential American designer best known today for her distinctive Mid-Century glassware and decorative objects. Although her silver-banded glass is perhaps her most recognizable work, Thorpe designed in a wide variety of materials and is documented as having worked with plastics and resins. Sculptural cast-resin works by Thorpe are known from the Mid-Century period, making these candlesticks an interesting example of a lesser-seen area of her design work.The exact model or design name of these candlesticks has not been identified. I have been unable to locate another example of this exact form. Their surviving original Dorothy C. Thorpe, Inc. labels provide excellent documentation of both the maker and material.Condition:
One candlestick is in beautiful, pristine vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs observed.The second candlestick has a sizable chip/loss along the edge of one upper flower/palm petal, clearly shown in the photographs. It otherwise displays beautifully.Both retain their original Dorothy C. Thorpe, Inc. labels. There is some natural variation in the pink/salmon coloration between the two pieces.Please review all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up photographs of the damaged petal, as they form an important part of the condition description.Sold together as the matched pair.
