Exceptionally scarce and historically documented World War I hometown service medal presented by the citizens of Hellertown, Pennsylvania and Lower Saucon Township.
Obverse features the United States Forces design incorporating the Borough of Hellertown seal. Reverse reads:
“Presented by the Citizens of Hellertown, Pa. and Lower Saucon Township in Grateful Recognition of Patriotic Services in the World War 1917-1918.”
Contemporary reporting of Hellertown's 1919 Welcome Home celebration documents that 85 servicemen gathered for the event and were presented with bronze medals matching this inscription. Relatives of five local men who died in service were to receive similar medals containing a gold star. �
