Rare 1659 French silver jeton from the reign of Louis XIV, associated with the King’s Council and the struggle for Dunkirk during the conflict between France and Spain.
The dated side features a hand emerging from the clouds, holding an axe decorated with fleurs-de-lis above a reclining lion representing Spain. The Latin inscription “VLTIMVS IMMINET ICTVS” translates to “The final blow is imminent,” a striking statement of French royal power.
The opposite side displays the crowned arms of France surrounded by the collars of the royal orders. Its inscription, “NIL NISI CONSILIO,” means “Nothing without counsel.”
An intriguing piece of French royal and military history from the 1600s, over 350 years old.
