Original hand-painted pottery wall shield by noted San Felipe Pueblo artist Ralph Aragon (1944–2025), dated 2000.
This striking Southwestern shield features a central deer or elk surrounded by animal tracks and Pueblo-inspired geometric designs. It is painted in muted turquoise, rust, black, cream, and earthy brown tones. Three leather ties decorated with metal cones, natural feathers, and long leather streamers hang from the bottom.
The mottled and speckled appearance of the painted surface is an intentional part of the artist’s distinctive distressed-style finish—it is not paint loss. The reverse is signed “R. Aragon 2000” within Ralph Aragon’s recognizable stepped Pueblo design. A leather loop at the top allows the shield to be displayed on a wall.
The pottery shield measures approximately 13 inches across and 12½ inches tall, excluding the hanging decorations.
Condition: No obvious chips or cracks were observed. The feathers and leather attachments show age-related wear, including bending, fraying, and feather loss. The black-painted back has light marks and scratches consistent with previous display. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are part of the condition description.
