RMS Carpathia - Cunard Liner, Circa 1916. Watercolor and Gouache, Matted, by Pennsylvania Artist David Young.
The Cunard liner RMS Carpathia, is most famous for her involvement in the Titanic tradegy. She was 58 miles away when the SOS went out and upon hearing the message that the Titanic was sinking, she raced to the scene and successfully rescued 705 souls who managed to survive in lifeboats. It was considered a most heroic act and was received with great fanfare upon her arrival in New York with the survivors.
She was sunk herself in 1918 after being struck by three torpedoes off the east coast of Ireland by the notorious German submarine U-55. Its infamous captain Wilhelm Werner, sank 61 merchant ships, the Carpathia and the hospital ship \"Rewa\". He committed atrocious crimes of murdering survivors by assembling them on the deck of his submarine, then diving, and letting them all drown. Although charged with war crimes he was never brought to trial.
