1749 David Brainerd Journal - 2 Original \'leaf(s)\' - to Frame
David Brainerd (1718–1747) was an American Presbyterian missionary known for his dedicated but short-lived work among Native American tribes in the mid-18th century. Appointed by the Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge, he began his missionary service in 1743. He first worked among the Mohican (Stockbridge) Indians at Kaunaumeek, New York, studying their language and teaching. Many Native Americans converted, abandoned practices like drunkenness, formed a Christian community, and showed deep conviction under his preaching. He baptized converts, established schools, and pastored the new believers. Brainerd died of tuberculosis in 1747 at age 29 in Northampton, Massachusetts, while staying with Jonathan Edwards (whose daughter he was engaged to). Edwards later published Brainerd’s journals, which became highly influential, inspiring later missionaries like William Carey and Jim Elliot with his model of fervent prayer, self-denial, and devotion.
