Description La Legionella pneumophila del sierogruppo 1 è la principale causa di legionellosi nell'uomo ed è associata alla sopravvivenza intracellulare nei macrofagi alveolari. Il presente studio ha esaminato la presenza e le caratteristiche delle specie Legionella tra i pazienti oncologici e negli ambienti ospedalieri presso il Centro di Oncologia dell'Ospedale Al-Sadr di Bassora, in Iraq. Tra gennaio e marzo 2020 sono stati raccolti in totale 360 campioni (271 clinici e 89 ambientali). Gli isolati presuntivi sono stati identificati mediante coltura su agar BCYE, test biochimici e fisiologici, analisi del biofilm, sierotipizzazione e metodi molecolari. Sono stati recuperati 100 isolati di Legionella. Il test di agglutinazione al lattice ha identificato 85 isolati come L. pneumophila del sierogruppo 1 e 15 come sierogruppi da 2 a 15. I test di sensibilità antimicrobica su 93 isolati rispetto a nove antibiotici hanno rivelato 23 isolati resistenti; alcuni ceppi selezionati sono stati ulteriormente valutati mediante determinazione della CMI. La conferma molecolare mediante primer specifici per la specie (JFP/JRP, 360 bp) ha rilevato 95 isolati positivi, di cui 24 provenienti da campioni di sangue, 17 da campioni di urina e 24 da campioni di espettorato.
