Description by Youichiro Okuda
Approximately 50% of the production process is completed using 3D printing, while the remaining 50% is finished by hand. Every piece is crafted with great care, but slight variations, minor imperfections, and small surface marks may be present due to the handmade nature of the work. These characteristics are part of the uniqueness of each piece.
Materials & Construction
The Hanafuda card itself is a hybrid composite artwork, created using a combination of:
* 3D printed resin
* Epoxy resin
* 3D printed plastic
Each piece is individually hand-painted using both an airbrush and fine brushes.
The final epoxy resin layer utilizes surface tension to create a slightly raised, glossy finish, adding depth and dimension to the artwork.
Display Stand
The included display stand is coated with a UV-resistant clear finish and features the engraved title: “Matsu ni Tsuru” "松に鶴"
(Pine and Crane)
Storage Box
The custom storage box is designed to protect both the Hanafuda display piece and stand.
High-density EVA foam is applied to all contact points inside the box to help prevent scratches, impact damage, and movement during storage.
Photography
Product photographs were taken under continuous lighting using a Canon EF100mm F2.8L IS USM Macro Lens to accurately capture the details and texture of the artwork.
Each piece is individually crafted and intended as a display artwork expressing the beauty of traditional Japanese Hanafuda design.
Youichiro Okuda
Youichiro Okuda is a Kyoto-based photographer, hairstylist, and visual artist whose work bridges traditional Japanese culture and contemporary artistic expression.
After graduating from Otani High School and Amuse Beauty College, Okuda built a distinguished career as a hairstylist. He is the owner and lead stylist of rio, a hair salon located in Kyoto’s historic Higashiyama district, with more than 25 years of professional experience in the beauty industry.
In addition to his work as a hairstylist, Okuda is also active as a fashion and commercial photographer, collaborating with apparel brands and creating original photographic works inspired by Japanese aesthetics, cultural heritage, and everyday beauty.
Achievements & Exhibitions
● Prize Winner, National Photo Contest organized by the Japan Beauty Association
● Multiple awards, including First Prize, at the Kyoto Beauty Association Photo Contest
● Credited photographer for a feature article in The Nikkei (Nihon Keizai Shimbun) on January 8, 2020, documenting the traditional Japanese hairstyling techniques demonstrated during Kyoto’s historic Kushi Matsuri (Comb Festival)
● Selected artist for exhibition at the Kyoto Museum of Culture Contemporary Photography Exhibition
● Designed a unique tote bag featuring Kyoto’s famous Naginata Hoko float, which was sold through Kinokuniya Bookstore in 2024 and during the Gion Festival in 2025
Through photography, design, and visual storytelling, Okuda continues to explore new ways of expressing the elegance, history, and cultural richness of Kyoto.
