EGAN, Howard R. Pioneering the West 1846 to 1878; Major Howard Egan’s Diary. Richmond, UT: Howard R. Egan Estate, 1917. Unbound and Uncut
1 vol., 8vo (5 1/2” x 8”), pp, 302. Unbound and uncut, no covers. Good condition. Rips on the front cover with loss in the bottom left. Water stains on the edges. The paper has browned with age. Pages are clean of writing and marks.
Appears tohave never been bound, and the pages are uncut, making for difficult reading, but perhaps a unique piece of early 20th-century Mormon printing. Egan (d. 1878) was an Irish immigrant who converted to Mormonism in 1842 and moved to Nauvoo, where he became a general of the Nauvoo Legion. A part of the 1847 vanguard that entered the Salt Lake Valley during the Mormon Exodus. He was also involved in the Pony Express.
