Pioneer CT-F900 3-Head Cassette Deck Extensive Restoration and Service Tested For Sale

This Pioneer CT-F900 has received a thorough mechanical and electronic restoration with the goal of putting a great vintage cassette deck back into reliable service for its next owner. This was much more than replacing a belt and confirming that a cassette plays. Age-related components were addressed, the transport and controls were serviced, and the completed deck was then put through 24 hours of actual play and record testing before being offered for sale.

I realize that quality vintage cassette decks command premium prices today. For that kind of investment, I want to offer a deck that has had the time, attention and service these machines deserve—not simply one that happens to be working on the day it is listed.

The CT-F900 was thoroughly cleaned inside and out before undergoing its mechanical and electronic service. The restoration was completed on May 17, 2026 and included: I have had the same technician service several decks for me as well as a preamplifier, and have been extremely happy with all the work.

• Aged electrolytic capacitors replaced
• Drive belts replaced
• Aged/worn rubber tires and idlers replaced
• Additional electronic components that failed inspection or testing replaced
• Pots, switches and controls cleaned and lubricated as appropriate
• Transport and mechanical components rebuilt, cleaned, serviced and lubricated as needed
• Tape path thoroughly cleaned
• Heads cleaned and demagnetized
• Capstan and other tape-contact surfaces cleaned
• Circuit boards, electrical connections and solder joints inspected
• Additional servicing and adjustments performed as necessary

One of the listing photographs shows the actual belts, tires, capacitors and other components replaced from this CT-F900 during restoration. I included that photograph so a prospective buyer can see some of the work that went into the deck rather than having to rely on the word “serviced.”

After restoration, I personally put the CT-F900 through approximately 24 hours of play and record testing.

That included extended playback as well as making and playing back recordings through the line inputs and microphone inputs. The headphone output, meters, controls, switches, fast forward, rewind, pause and other transport and operating functions were also checked during this period, and all were working.

I believe extended testing is especially important with vintage electronics. Twenty-four hours of actual playing, recording and operation gives intermittent problems a much better opportunity to show themselves than a quick function check.

The CT-F900 is a 3-head, two-motor, closed-loop dual-capstan cassette deck that allows source/tape monitoring while recording. It features continuously adjustable bias, Dolby B noise reduction, automatic CrO₂ tape selection, fluorescent level meters, an electronic tape counter, Memory Stop/Memory Play and Counter Repeat/End Repeat.

This is an original vintage component, and my approach to cosmetics is to preserve as much of the original finish and appearance as possible while making reasonable improvements.

The deck has been thoroughly cleaned and detailed inside and out. Small scuffs and scratches have been carefully touched up where practical to improve its appearance. These touch-ups are minor cosmetic improvements, not a complete cosmetic restoration, and normal evidence of age and previous use remains.

I have made an effort to photograph all visible cosmetic imperfections. Please examine all of the photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description and show the actual CT-F900 you will receive.

My goal with these restored decks is to address the age-related problems that can reasonably be identified and provide the next owner with a machine that has been prepared for many more years of use and enjoyment.

At the same time, I want to be realistic about equipment approaching 50 years old. Many aged, worn or failed components have been replaced, but not every original electronic component inside the CT-F900 was replaced. As with any vintage electronic equipment, it is possible for an original component to fail sometime in the future.

I can\'t reasonably guarantee that a vintage component will never need another repair. What I can provide is a deck that has received substantial restoration work, photographs documenting the components replaced, and 24 hours of actual play and record testing before being offered for sale.

Vintage audio equipment needs to be packed properly. This CT-F900 will be carefully packed with particular attention to protecting the faceplate, knobs, switches, controls and cabinet during shipment.
