Turkish black amber, known as Oltutası, is a distinguished semi-precious stone primarily extracted from the Oltu region (Erzurum) in northeastern Turkey since the 18th century. While famous for its ornamental use, especially in rosaries, modern reviews of its geological properties have been lacking.
This paper addresses this gap by presenting original research on Oltutası-bearing deposits from the Jurassic to Cretaceous periods. These deposits feature a flysch sequence, including interbedded limestone, sandstone, volcanic material, marl, and claystone.
Oltutası appears as lenses ranging from 0.2 to 75 mm in thickness, embedded in a matrix of pebble, sandstone, and siltstone layers.
The lenses exhibit folded and faulted structures due to tectonic deformation in the region. Microphotographic analysis indicates that Oltutası is primarily composed of carbonaceous material, with fractures filled with resin and macerals such as euhedral pyrite and hematite minerals are finely disseminated within the organic matter.
This research enhances the understanding of Oltutası's geological significance and its value as a semi-precious stone.
