Original 1930 Bermond BANDOL 160x120cm French Art Deco Travel Poster Riviera: $1495.00
ORIGINAL 1930 FRENCH ART DECO TRAVEL POSTER\"BANDOL -Le Casino Municipal\" byAndréBermondExceptionally Large Format Stone Lithograph 160 x 120 cm | Linen-Backed|French Riviera|Water-skiingThis is the very rare, exceptionally large 160 x 120 cm format, considerably larger than the approximately 100 x 62 cm format more commonly encountered. A striking statement piece at almost 1.6 metres dir=\"ltr\">This original 1930 French travel poster for \"Bandol — Le Casino Municipal\"(promoting the fashionable Mediterranean resort of Bandol and its Casino Municipal) is a rare large-format work by André Bermond (1903–1983), signed and dated \"André Bermond 30\" in the upper right. Bermond was a Marseille-born painter, illustrator and poster artist best known for his Art Deco travel and sports posters for French Riviera and winter sports destinations. His style (bold color blocking, simplified geometry, joyful movement) is perfectly expressed here: a hydroplaner (early form of water-skiing) in the Mediterranean, the Casino Municipal and Bandol coastline behind them, rendered in cobalt blue, golden yellow and coral red. This was characteristic of the elegant French Art Deco travel-poster style of the period. The Casino Municipal at Bandol opened in July 1930, making this poster a precise document of the resort\'s launch into the interwar Riviera tourism boom. Hydroplaning was a fashionable new sport at the time and Bermond\'s choice of subject captures exactly the spirit of modern leisure the resort was selling. It was printed by Imprimerie Moullot, Marseille, the leading lithographic printer of French Riviera tourism posters throughout this period. The design is held in the Mucem (Musée des Civilisations de l\'Europe et de la Méditerranée) collection in Marseille and is catalogued as No. 426 in Affiches de la Riviera and referenced in Sportissimo (p. 135),which are important bibliographic references for serious collectors.
