This was an unparalleled, once in a lifetime estate sale find! I found it in the bottom of a large storage bin inside a Ziploc bag which included a couple of the sharpie markers used to sign the hat. The estate seller had no idea it was signed by Michael Phelps and other prominent U.S. Olympic swimmers.
Since there are at least five athletes represented on the hat who did not make the U.S. Olympic Swim Team in 2004, I believe the hat was signed at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, which took place in Long Beach, California (July 7 - 14, 2004).
