This hand-colored lithograph is a well-known historical portrait created for the publicationHistory of the Indian Tribes of North Americaby Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall.
- The original portrait was painted by artist Charles Bird King.
- The chief is depicted wearing a Sioux dress, not a Chippewa one, a detail that was a source of jocularity among other Native Americans at the time
- Okee-Maakee-Quid was a Chippewa chief and canoe maker, who made a canoe for McKenney and was part of the powerful Chippewa tribe.
- The print was part of an effort to preserve a visual record of Native American leaders who visited Washington D.C. for treaty negotiations, many of whom were displaced after the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
- McKenney and Hall\'s work is considered an invaluable and important historical and ethnographic record from the 19th century.
