Marianne North (1830-1890) was an English botanical artist and pioneering naturalist who revolutionized plant illustration through oil painting and extensive global travel. After her father's death in 1869, she pursued her passion for documenting the world's flora, visiting 15 countries across six continents between 1871 and 1885. Her travels took her through South Africa, Brazil, India, the Seychelles, Jamaica, California, Japan, and Tenerife, where she painted botanical specimens within their natural landscapes. Working almost always alone, North produced 848 paintings in just 13 years, employing oil paints to achieve unprecedented vibrancy and scientific accuracy. Her works combined botanical precision with landscape and cultural contexts, sometimes incorporating animals, architecture, and local people. In 1882, she donated 832 paintings to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and funded the construction of a gallery to house her remarkable collection—the only permanent solo exhibition by a female artist in Britain at that time.
