Beautiful carved wooden Māori Kōauau flute with matching wooden display stand, featuring intricate traditional-style spiral and figural carving throughout.
The Kōauau measures approximately 6 inches long and has a hollow wooden body with open ends and an attached woven cord. Includes the separate contoured wooden stand shown in the photos.
This piece closely resembles carved Kōauau flutes made and sold in New Zealand with wooden display stands. Traditional Kōauau are Māori wind instruments; however, this example does not have the typical series of finger holes, so it may have been created primarily as a decorative/display interpretation rather than a fully functional instrument.
Condition: Pre-owned with surface wear, scratches and patina. There are visible cracks around the end opening/rim, as shown in the close-up photos. The wooden stand also shows scratches and finish wear.
Exact age, maker, wood species, and playability are unknown. No maker’s mark was found.
