MANUEL OLIVAS MATA ORTIZ / CASAS GRANDES POLYCHROME POTTERY BOWL
Offered here is a signed polychrome pottery bowl attributed to Manuel Olivas (1940–2007), associated with the early development of Mata Ortiz pottery and the revival of ancient Casas Grandes/Paquimé ceramic traditions in Chihuahua, Mexico.
This attractive handmade vessel measures approximately 6 inches tall × 7-1/2 inches at its widest point.
The bowl has a broad open form with rounded sides and a slightly flared rim. The buff/tan earthenware body is decorated with red and black polychrome geometric designs, including sweeping linear, triangular, and feather/leaf-like motifs around the exterior.
An especially attractive feature is the decoration around the inside edge of the rim, consisting of a repeating black triangular geometric border. The unglazed interior displays the handmade characteristics associated with this type of pottery.
The underside bears a large incised handwritten signature reading "Manuel Olivas," together with an additional incised symbol beneath the signature. Please examine the included close-up photographs of the signature and make your own determination regarding the inscription and attribution.
