A magnificent example of early to mid–19th century craftsmanship, this antique box features a finely carved shell cameo of Jupiter (Zeus), king of the gods in classical mythology. Measuring approximately 1.75 inches high by 1.25 inches wide (4.4 cm by 3.2 cm), the cameo depicts the enthroned deity with his staff of authority, accompanied by his sacred eagle—symbols of divine sovereignty and wisdom.
The cameo is surrounded by a sculptural frame: silver branches interlaced with fine 14k gold wire (gold content unmarked, assumed approx. based on visual assessment/acid test), accented with applied gold leaves. Among the foliage are natural rubies, emeralds, and pearls, each displaying inclusions and variations consistent with untreated gemstones.
The box measures approx. 3 inches deep by 2.75 inches wide by 1.25 inches high (7.6 cm x 7 cm x 3.2 cm) and weighs around 114 grams. It is made from unmarked continental silver, estimated at 800 silver standard. Purity was determined using acid testing and stylistic features consistent with 19th-century European silversmithing. The textured side band adds depth and visual weight, while the interior is richly gilded.
The exact original use is unknown, it may have functioned as a snuff box, pill box, or purely as a decorative objet d’art. Its high-quality mixed metalwork, carved cameo, and gemstones suggest it may have been a luxury Grand Tour souvenir collected by an affluent 19th-century traveler.
