Mid-20th century Maasai beaded collar acquired from a wealthy traveler’s estate. Purchased in East Africa during the post-independence safari travel boom, circa 1960s–early 1970s. The original handwritten tag from the former owner records a price of 65 shillings at time of purchase, consistent with Kenyan/Tanzanian tourist and curio shop markets of the period.
Glass seed beads in traditional Maasai color palette are stitched directly to a leather backing. The clasp is made from hand-bent mild steel wire staples, a construction method typical of mid-century export beadwork made for sale to Western travelers.
Acquired from a mid-century Philadelphia estate belonging to a well-traveled American collector with objects from Africa, the Pacific, and other regions. Estate context suggests purchase during overseas travel in the mid-20th century.
Diameter approximately 10 inches. Beadwork intact with age-appropriate wear to leather and oxidation to wire hardware. Closure functions. No modern repairs observed. Suitable for wall display, collection, or reference.
