Martin Cooper worked with Motorola since the 1960’s and was able to create and make a totally wireless cell call in appx. 1973. Further development led to the famous DYNATACS AKA “The BRICKS” which were granted FCC&IEEE approval for public (retail) use in 1983 and available commercially in 1984. They were named - meaning dynamic adaptive total area coverage and has loosely integrated with the early BELL, AMERTITECH, CELLULAR ONE using 1G ANALOGUE/800 AMPS(advanced mobile systems ) generated a signal from an 8 byte microprocessor. Initially the phone was close to a foot long, had an 8” antenna and weighed appx. 2.5 lbs. and a cost of $3999 and 42 cents/ minute. Today’s equivalent $11,000 and $1.25/minute. These bricks were a LUXURY ITEM and are still functional but cannot connect today to today’s carriers. Gold plating was used on the internal contacts and federal inspectors were on site to keep quality standards.
The “brick “ were cumbersome. IN 1990 MOTOROLA TRIED THE 8800x offered here. The original talk time even fully charged with a standard battery was but 30 minutes and a memory of 30#. The 8800X WAS THINNER, lighter, more cost effective and had a more advanced microprocessor. Better memory, more talk time and portability.
Some say that the specs were kicked down the road and incorporated into the microtac(aka Star Trek communicator).
Other than the above, the 8800X had a small green led display and MANUFACTURED IN A limited run.
The particular one offered for sale has but 120 minutes of cumulative minutes of use and cosmetically appears unused and case kept.
It has 20 white translucent back lit slightly concave buttons with distinct black lettering with the alpha ABOVE the central black distinctive numberic. The send key which makes 21 total is bold red. There is no dedicated LOCK key but replaced by menu/name. It takes user to lock BY a toggle of two keys.

Battery-ORIGINAL MOTOROLA SNN4038A 7.5V NICKLE CADMIUM WITH THE CIRCLED M LOGO ON THE OUTSIDE. Being 30+ years old the amount of charge it holds is questionable at best. Ni- cads are not known for great longevity .The logo represents transistors and sine waves- the future of electronics.

The seller has used an inexpensive 3 AMP 3-12V AC/DC adapter, set to no more than 7.3V DC. Easily obtained from Amazon . Seller offers numerous original/tested Motorola alternatives for powering . Check listings. Be wary of repacked batteries , ( some sellers claim them to be new!) even with warranty. The MANUFACTURER WARNS ABOUT THESE. The seller has the last two NICKLE hydride for sale and certified by a major battery manufacturer in Germany. No longer available . These will function and not harm your phone. They are the last NOS. Non certified repacked can ruin your precious phone. And warranted. Good luck on getting the seller of these to replace your phone!!!!
The seller notes that for some reason there is only a slight audible click heard when the numbers are inputed , but all #’s are clear and there is a distinct and audible rapid beeping when you push send button. Maybe it’s a setting no owners manual.
The memory is EMPTY.
These seller feels that this limited production model was a transitional variation offered by Motorola before the ultra classic 1 and 2 series and much before the 1996 dual mode digital/analogue LAST OF THE DYNATAC ERA!
Seller has a superb example of the above listed digital/analogue dual mode phone .
The seller doesn’t throw up 100 cells with a one paragraph AI GENERATED description and no video. Or is 1/2 way around the world. He has an established DynaTAC community and abundant inventory of quality phones . All restored to as close as left store as possible and provenanced. Sell offers under separate listing all the original phone peripherals and will soon be listing original owners manuals from 1985-1996. And down the road a lot of the nuts and bolts / parts for the DIY.
