Working for Motorola in the 1970’s, Martin Cooper developed the FIRST truly mobile handheld cordless phone. It held a 30# memory and 30 minutes of talk time. Only took 8-10 hrs. to charge!!
It worked on an 800 AMPS (advanced mobile phone system) carrier. Cooper placed the first call in 1973. However, it was not until Sept. 1983 that Motorola received FCC/IEEE approval for public use. The carriers under the loose Bell flag were Ameritech, AT&T, AND ETC. There were all blended into a mega telecommunications conglomerate.
The FLAGSHIP was the Motorola designated DynaTAC ( dynamic total area coverage), 8000X, was offered publicly for $4000, today $11000. Minutes 42 cents $1.25 today
.TODAY, if you Could find an Original 8000X , they sell for 10k or more depending on condition . These were first offered to the public in the DC, New York, Chicago and other major metropolitan areas by Ameritech. The CELL PHONE changed the global culture and social media forever. Weighing 2.5 lbs and over a foot they were affectionately called the BRICK.
The phone offered for sale is the SECOND FLAGSHIP!!! 8000SL. Retail $2000 in 1987, which would be $5721 today dollars. The 8000SL Boasted solid reliability and functionality . Offered 30 minutes of talk time . IT COULD BE TWEAKED BY MOTOROLA FOR ETACS international. This example from Los Angeles was no doubt 800 AMPS.

15. This was the first display with big red bold display led characters and numbers.
16. The red number crystal face bears the slightest of wear as does the frame front.
17. The phone shows mild wear compared to others of this vintage. The keypad numbers and alpha unworn and atypical the front does not manifest any hairline vertical crack. The terminals on all parts show little to no oxidation. Do doubt case kept.
