Martin Cooper, working for MOTOROLA in the 1960s and culminating in 1973, developed the first truly mobile handheld cell phone. He called his rival at Bell Labs on that fateful day in 1973, standing on 6th Ave in NYC.
It was not until Sept. 1983 that the FCC/IEEE sanctioned the cell phone for the public domain. These foot-long, 2.5 lb phones were nicknamed the “BRICK.” They were interfaced with various carriers such as Cellular One, Ameritech, Bell South, etc., mostly in large metro areas such as D.C., NYC, Chicago, L.A., etc. The carriers transmitted using what was an analog 800 AMPS system (Advanced Mobile Phone System). These early Motorola phones were also known as DynaTACs (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage Service).
The mobile phone revolutionized world culture and social media forever. Their impact on our culture has been compared to the wheel, automobile, personal computer, and first self-sustaining nuclear reaction.
Forbes, WorthPoint, Collectors Weekly, and The Glass Almanac (Brian Foster) all consider these early cell phones a sound techno collector investment. They are becoming harder to find each year. An Apple I was recently sold by Heritage sales for $1,500,000.
