A low, full-bellied round bowl under a pale grey-green celadon, with the crackle (kanyu) run deliberately wide so the whole surface is drawn into a net of fine dark lines. The rim rolls over and turns in; underneath, three short feet lift the pot clear of the shelf and leave the glaze visible almost to the base. The interior is glazed a quieter cream. Large crackle over celadon was one of the effects this maker was known for, and at this scale it gives a small pot a surface worth reading on its own.

町直
Machinao (町直), born Imaoka Machinao in Tokyo in 1925, came to pottery late and made small bonsai containers for less than two decades.
FoundationsHe spent his working life in education and opened his first kiln at Kodaira, Tokyo, in 1964. As the area was built over he moved to Ito, Shizuoka, in 1972 and continued there until closing the kiln in 1981. He also did a great deal to teach the craft, developing a small kiln kit and handbook through which a considerable number of amateurs began making pots of their own.
ProvenanceHe worked across a wide range of glazes; a Japanese survey of bonsai containers singles out his flowing shinsha, his celadon and white-porcelain large crackle, and kairagi, and lists a large-crackle celadon piece among his representative works. The base of this pot carries a single-character impressed mark, the form of mark recorded for him. Production ended in 1981, so no more are made. Attribution follows the description given by our Japanese source; we do not authenticate.
