Here’s a vintage Ludwig S-100 Standard 5x14 Snare Drum from the late-1960s / early-1970s Standard series.
This one has a particularly interesting finish story.
The drum originally left Ludwig in Blue Mist, but over the decades the exposed wrap has naturally faded into a convincing green-leaning shade. I’ve seen this happen on other Blue Mist Ludwig Standards, and this one has aged into a particularly attractive color.
You can still see a band of the original, less-faded Blue Mist near the bearing edges where the wrap received less light exposure. I’ve included photos showing that contrast.
This is not a rewrap or refinished drum. The greenish appearance is the result of the original Blue Mist wrap aging naturally.
The Ludwig Standard series was introduced as a more affordable alternative to Ludwig’s main professional lines, using simpler hardware while retaining the classic Ludwig wood-shell construction of the period. That makes these Standards great vintage player drums without some of the prices attached to comparable Jazz Festival-era snares.

ConditionVery Good vintage condition.The wrap shows the substantial but attractive age-related color change described above.There are normal cosmetic signs of age and use, but the drum remains in solid overall condition.The internal muffler works properly.The Ludwig throw-off is fully functional and feels solid.The current heads still have plenty of usable life remaining.Please look through all of the photos carefully, especially the areas near the bearing edges where you can see the difference between the original Blue Mist color and the exposed wrap as it appears today.
Personally, I think the fade is one of the coolest things about this drum. It gives it a look you simply couldn’t reproduce convincingly with a new finish.
