Georges Lepape defined the visual language of the Jazz Age.
Before Vogue became Vogue, Lepape was the hand behind it — the artist whose covers from the early 1920s set the template for what fashion illustration could be: architectural figures, impossible poise, color stripped down to its essential gesture. Trained in the classical tradition at the École des Beaux-Arts.
These heliogravures — printed in 1937 by Le Vasseur in a limited edition show the unusual tonal range of his palette: Lepape designed for the stage, for couture, for the page. They display well in pairs or runs.
