A striking and unusually large Chinese blue and white porcelain meiping vase, dating to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1900.
Standing an impressive 45 cm high, the vase is traditionally hand-painted in underglaze light blue with a wonderfully expressive four-clawed dragon sweeping dramatically around the body amongst stylised clouds and flame-like motifs.
The powerful central decoration is framed by an elaborate continuous band of flowering peony and foliate scrollwork around the high rounded shoulders, with further scrolling decoration encircling the short neck. Around the lower body is a particularly charming border of stylised cresting waves, giving the piece a richly decorated appearance from every angle.
The decoration draws upon the celebrated blue-and-white dragon porcelains of the earlier Ming tradition, a decorative vocabulary that continued to be revived and reinterpreted by Chinese potters during the Qing dynasty.
The vase is substantially potted with a characterful recessed, unglazed underside, displaying firing irregularities and natural surface characteristics consistent with its traditional manufacture and age.
At 45 cm (17.7 inches) high, this is a particularly decorative example of the meiping form, with considerable presence as a standalone object. The fluidity of the hand-painted dragon gives the vase tremendous character and distinguishes it from later mass-produced decorative porcelain.
A wonderful statement piece for a collection of Chinese ceramics or as an individual decorative object within a contemporary or traditional interior.

Wear consistent with age and use. Good antique condition, surface ware commensurate with age. No repairs, hairline cracks or chips can be found. A very well-preserved example for its age. Please refer to the photographs for full condition.
