Lacquerware Tea Caddy, LARGE, Japanese Meiji Red Lacquerware with River Scene For Sale

This box has charisma! This unusually large, unusually shaped Meiji period Japanese lacquerware tea caddy is in the form of a rectangular box with a divided, two-compartment permanently affixed insert. The main lid of the box opens on smooth hinges and features painted sakura, or cherry blossoms, around the edges, and a mountain, hut, river, and bridge scene in the recessed center. The box opens to display two compartments that have lift-off lids, also in lacquer. Both inner lids feature painted sakura decoration with complementary natural imagery in the charming molded pommels -- one is a pinecone, one is a pomegranate. The pommels appear to be bronze. The compartments are clean, and have a silver-tone interior of unknown composition--likely silver leaf under a lacquer layer. The front, back and sides of the box also have delicately painted sakura covering them. The box has a lock but no key. Dimensions

Condition
Good antique condition. Lacquer is intact on all flat areas, with little wear. Significant cracks and missing lacquer are on interior and exterior corners, as shown. Hinges work smoothly. Interior box lids fit perfectly. Box sits evenly. The box is unlocked and the key is missing. The item has been dusted but not cleaned in order to preserve patina and prevent damage. Patina and scratches to surface are consistent with age and origin. Please closely examine photos and video for condition. They serve as part of the description.
