Set the table for the other half of Christmas. Before Santa softened into a man in a red suit, Alpine families sent each other postcards of Krampus: the horned companion of Saint Nicholas, birch switch in hand, carrying off the children who had misbehaved. Those cards were printed in their millions across Austria, Bavaria and Hungary before the First World War, and they are what runs down the middle of this runner. The print is a checkerboard of those original Gruss vom Krampus images, deep reds and greens against cream, each one a different scene. It measures 13 in (33 cm) across and 72 in (183 cm) long, which covers a table seating four to six with an overhang at each end, and it also suits a sideboard, a hall console, a mantel or a bar top. The cloth is a woven polyester with a linen look and a close hem, so it lies flat instead of rolling at the edges, and it goes in the machine when the meal is over. On a bare wood table it does the whole job on its own, and it is the piece guests pick up and turn over to look at properly.
