About the artist, Kaoru Kawano (1916-1965) was a postwar printmaker from Otaru, Hokkaido, known for his charming stylized child figures, northern birds, owls, and the distinctive use of woodgrain in his prints. In 1934 he studied the art of wood blocking at Kawabata Art School and was accepted by the Japan Print Society because he sowed great promise in his early works.
In 1954 Kawano was awarded the prestigious Kokuga Prize.
