Plant Overview
Kalanchoe pinnata is a robust succulent known by many names such as Life Plant, Miracle Leaf, Cathedral Bells, Green Love, and Mother of Thousands. Each leaf is capable of producing new plantlets along its edges when given proper conditions.
The plant stores water in its thick, fleshy leaves, which allows it to tolerate occasional dry spells. Outdoors it thrives in warm subtropical climates (US hardiness zones 10–11). In cooler regions it makes an attractive houseplant or container succulent. This plant has also been used traditionally for its medicinal properties.
Because of its natural vigor and propagation ability, Kalanchoe pinnata spreads easily once established.
Care Instructions 🌱
Light
Provide bright, indirect light; a spot near a sunny window works well
Avoid prolonged exposure to intense direct midday sun to prevent leaf scorch
Water
Water only when the soil is completely dry
Use the “soak and dry” method: water thoroughly and let excess drain away, then wait until fully dry before watering again
Over-watering can lead to root rot, so err on the side of slightly too dry rather than too wet
Soil & Potting
Use well-draining soil such as a cactus or succulent mix, or a potting mix amended with sand or perlite
Pots with drainage holes are recommended to prevent standing water
Terracotta or porous containers help soil dry out more evenly
Temperature & Humidity
Prefers warm conditions typical of subtropical climates
Avoid frost and prolonged cold
Normal indoor humidity is fine; avoid water-logged soil or overly humid conditions
Propagation
Leaf propagation is easy: place a healthy leaf on top of soil or in shallow water; tiny plantlets will form along the leaf margin and can grow into new plants
Stem cuttings and rooted starters will also grow well under the care above
