This is the 1896 first edition, first issue of Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy, published by Osgood McIlvaine. It is Volume VIII of the Wessex Novels and includes a map of place names for all of the novels. The illustration at the beginning of the novel is by William Hatterall.This copy is in good condition, with the exception of the faded portions of the front cover. However the gilt stamp with Hardy\'s initials remain relatively bright and intact. The binding is solid and firm, although a bit ragged on the upper rear inside backing. The front inside cover includes a sticker for the Mexborough & Swinton Times Office Library and a written inscription on the opposite page.
The reception of Hardy\'s final novel was harsh, given its frank discussion of marriage, social class, and religion. But literary historians see the work as a bridge from the Victorian era to modern progressive literature. Hardy, given the public reaction, decided to end his career as a novelist and turn his attention to poetry.
