In 1753 Wesley becamegravely ill, leaving him temporarily unable to travel and preach. As a resultof this he set to work on a Biblical commentary and translation. He beganwriting on January 4, 1754 and continued without preaching until March, bywhich point he had produced a rough draft of the translation. Wesley's pace wasslowed by other activities, and he completed the commentary on September 23,1755, publishing the same year.Wesley's work has, over many decades, been an influence, especially onWesleyans and on Methodist lay preachers in particular, it is considered one ofhis major scholarly achievements, and through numerous editions and printingsbecame a stable of Methodist literature. Of Wesley's 12000 changes to the KJVmany have been incorporated into modern versions.
