Original Jean-Baptiste Tavernier Antique Engraving – Diamond & Gemstone Cuts
An original antique engraved plate associated with Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, the celebrated 17th-century French traveller, gem merchant and author whose writings became an important early European source on diamonds, gemstones and the historic gem trade.
The plate illustrates a substantial range of diamond and gemstone forms, cutting styles and faceting arrangements, together with early terminology and explanatory details. Particularly notable are the diagrams showing historic diamond cuts and the development of faceted stones at a formative period in European gem-cutting history.
The upper margin is marked “Pag. 388. 389.”, indicating its original relationship to the accompanying published text.
