James Coleman is an American painter and former animation background artist born in Hollywood, California, in 1949. He began his career at Walt Disney Studios at age 19, initially working in the mailroom before his artistic ability led him into the studio’s animation department.

During a career spanning more than 17 years at Disney, Coleman helped create and supervise hand-painted backgrounds for celebrated animated films including The Fox and the Hound, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast. His background work helped establish the atmosphere, lighting, color, and visual environment surrounding the animated characters.

After leaving Disney, Coleman pursued fine art full time, becoming known for luminous landscapes, gardens, waterscapes, and richly colored natural settings. His paintings often reflect the cinematic sense of light, depth, and atmosphere developed during his animation career. Coleman works in oils, acrylics, and mixed media, frequently incorporating expressive color and metallic elements.

In recent years, Coleman has also developed a technique he calls Dimensional Modern Impressionism, combining layered materials, texture, metallic leafing, and spontaneous painting methods to create highly reflective, visually dimensional compositions.
