This lithograph by Social Realist painter and printmakerJack Levine wasproduced in 1970. Itwas derived from a series of drawings Levine made in Chicago during theNational Democratic Convention of 1968. A painting of the same name was alsodeveloped from these drawings. In this print, Levine used his signature quick,expressive strokes to depict a gentleman from memory whom he described as leanand handsome. Another impression of this print is held by the Brooklyn Museum.
About the artist
Jack Levine (1915–2010) was defined by art critics as a Social Realist artist. Heis renowned for his sarcastic and humorous paintings and prints about sociallife, political themes, and biblical scenes. Although his style is quick andexpressive—and is sometimes consideredExpressionist—we can identify the deep influence ofOld Masters such as Rubens, Goya, and El Greco.His works are held by numerous collectors and major museums, including theMetropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA.
