A particularly fine watercolor portrait of an elderly matron dressed in black, with a white lace cap and glimpse of a white blouse. The sitter looks half awake in her pose, gazing with hazel brown eyes to the right of the viewer. The artist has beautifully captured the nature light falling on the old lady's face, as well as her shiny brown hair pinned tightly on top her head. The watercolour has been signed and dated within the composition and newly mounted in a veneer wood frame. On paper.

Nils Ivan Thord Lindhé (Swedish-American, 1875-1954) noted painter, primarily known for his portrait works in oil and watercolor as well as other paintings.

Born in Norrkoping, Sweden in 1875, Lindhe was educated at the War College. He was commissioned first lieutenant of the Royal First Life Grenadier Regiment and was stationed at Linkoping for four years.

He worked as a portraitist in Europe and in Buffalo, New York before moving to Los Angeles in the late 1920s. After his wife died he emigrated from the U.S. back to Sweden in May of 1931. He continued to paint portraits through the 1940’s, and died in 1954.

Lindhé exhibited internationally throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, and his works can know be found in numerous public and private collections as well as museums and galleries worldwide.
