HENRY WORDSWORTH LONGFELLOW (1807-1882) was one of the most celebrated American poets of the 19th century. He became a professor at Harvard and a central figure in shaping American literary identity. Longfellow, a classmate of Nathaniel Hawthorne, was educated at Bowdoin College.
