*This lot contains an original March 29, 1963 unsigned query letter Carbon from super-agent H.N. Swanson about the rights to FUNNY THING - And a doorknob pitching Prince ONE OF MY LOVERS IS MISSING. (Classic old Hollywood - Ask to buy something, then when you have their attention, offer something for sale. Size is 8.5 x 11\".
Pictured at left is the carbon request - Pictured at right is Prince\'s response (April 9, 1963) on his Personal Letterhead.Appx. 8.5 x 7.5\". Also find notes in pencil that may have been Swanson\'s regarding this correspondence for follow-up or filing. Have included CU of writing. Difficult to read, but looks like something is up.
It is historically significant, that Swanson\'s FUNNY THING query letter was written right after the Broadway success of the play (1962 Tony winner), during early motion picture rights discussions.
The correspondence references film rights discussions, connects Broadway to Hollywood and involves Swanson (agency provenance). Prince\'s response is signed in ink and cdates to an early period of Prince’s production dominance
Prince became one of the most important producers in American theater history (Sondheim era, etc.), so serious Broadway collectors pay attention.

*H. N. SWANSON / JOEL GOTLER LITERARY AGENCY:
Harold Norling Swanson (August 28, 1899 – May 31, 1991) was a literary agent who represented Raymond Chandler, F. Scott Fitzgerald and many other well-known American writers. He was a member of the Cliff Dwellers Club and was one of the founding members of the Tavern Club in Chicago.
In 1934, Swanson opened his eponymous agency on Sunset Boulevard. He began representing adventurer-writer Frank Buck in 1935, soon after Buck\'s appearance in Fang and Claw, the documentary film based on his book of the same name. Swanson\'s efforts led to Buck\'s first appearance in a dramatic role, in the 15-chapter serial Jungle Menace, released by Columbia Pictures in 1937.
At one time or another, Swanson represented Ayn Rand, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James M. Cain, William Faulkner, MacKinlay Kantor, Kenneth Millar (Ross Macdonald), Pearl Buck, Raymond Chandler, Elmore Leonard, John O\'Hara, Joyce Carol Oates, Paul Theroux, Joseph Wambaugh, Philip Wylie and Cornell Woolrich. Among the many books he sold to the Hollywood studios were The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Big Sleep, Old Yeller, Butterfield 8 and The Mosquito Coast and many more.
Swanson\'s first business partner, Joel Gotler, acquired both the Swanson Agency Client List and Irving \"Swifty\" Lazar\'s Client List in 1979. Please note the Swanson / Gotler Archive also includes rare material from Lazar\'s Agency. Joel Gotler & Associates still remains in operation today.
