Illustrated Work
A richly illustrated nineteenth-century account of Greece covering scenery, architecture, costume, geography, antiquities, and fine arts. The volume includes steel plates, maps and plans, and numerous wood engravings. Subjects and views include Athens, the Parthenon, Corinth, Mycenae, Mount Parnassus, the Olympian Games, Santorin, Greek sculpture, Greek architecture, and Greek art.
Distinctive illustrations include Athens, from Mount Hymettus, Scene on the Cracchus, near Argos, and Mount Parnassus, from Delphi. The book also contains a printed dedication to George, Earl of Aberdeen.
Condition
Acceptable. The decorative binding has substantial rubbing and abrasion to the leather, with pronounced wear at the spine ends, raised bands, board edges, and corners. Gilt decoration is rubbed in places. The marbled endpapers and paper show age toning, scattered foxing, and brown spotting, with heavier staining on the preliminary leaves. The gilt page edges retain their finish with handling marks and wear. No dust jacket is present.
