Rev. Dr. Henry Marvin Wharton (1848–1928) was a highly influential 19th and early 20th-century evangelical Baptist minister, author, and Civil War veteran. Born in Culpeper, Virginia, he served in the Confederate Army before entering the ministry, eventually becoming a nationally renowned preacher and the Chaplain General of the United Confederate Veterans.A few key highlights of his life and career include:

• Military and Legal Background: During the Civil War, he served as a private in General Robert E. Lee’s army. After the war, he studied law and practiced for five years before finding his calling in the church.
• Preaching and Ministry: He was baptized in 1874 by his brother (the Rev. Dr. M.B. Wharton), attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and was ordained in 1875. Over his 40-year career, he traveled the country as an evangelist and established churches.
• Author and Publisher: He owned his own publishing company (Wharton & Barron) and wrote numerous books. He is perhaps most famously known for compiling and editing
• Death: He passed away in June 1928 at the age of 79 and was buried in Pikesville, Maryland.
