This print comes from Décors et costumes pour L\'Oiseau Bleu (Paris: 1927)—a volume of Lepape\'s art that stands as a holy grail of Art Deco theater design. It documents Georges Lepape\'s avant-garde theater and costume designs for Maurice Maeterlinck\'s Symbolist play. Printed in a small edition of 230 copies, individual pochoir plates from this series are scarce on the market.
La Mère Tyl (Mother Tyl) depicts the mother of Tyltyl and Mytyl. Lepape renders her holding a finger to her lips, wearing a fitted magenta bodice with white button details over a long, pale blue-gray skirt trimmed with a dark blue hem. Saudé’s stencil work applies crisp, flat passes of opaque gouache in single layers directly over the transferred line art and gray background wash.
Georges Lepape was a preeminent figure of early 20th-century French art and fashion illustration, renowned for his iconic covers for Vogue and Gazette du Bon Ton, which helped define the visual aesthetic of the Art Deco era.
Jean Saudé was the era\'s supreme master of art pochoir. In his landmark 1925 treatise Traité d’enluminure d’art au pochoir, Saudé detailed his process of applying watercolor and gouache through hand-cut stencils.
