US FANCY CANCELS

RELATIVE RARITY vs.DESIREABLITY

Owning a fancy cancel on agreat stamp is one of the great pleasures of philately.

Owning a rare cancel on yourfavorite stamp design also brings great joy.

Owning a rare color varietyof cancellation can make the serotonin flow as well

Owning a rare, colored, fancycancel is the best of all three worlds!

RARE

Rare is rare, but it does not equate to desirability? or value.

You may find a unique cork cancel thatcomes through as one large blob that obliterates Benjamin Franklin?s face on a4-margin #1, and even though it is the only recorded such blob, it may actuallydevalue the stamp that it obliterated. Such a cancel may cause that #1 to sellfor half of its value with an otherwise light cancel.

DESIREABLITY

Desirability on the other hand, might increase thevalue of a stamp exponentially. A $3.00 Scott's #65 might have a West Meridian canceldepicting a 'devil with a pitchfork' that there are dozens, or hundreds, known - but its value might be in the thousands of dollars. Because it is desirable.

The 'HOLY GRAIL's of fancy cancels are those wherethe 'rare' and the 'desirable' cross paths. If there was only one 'devil with apitchfork', it's value would be multiples of what its current value.

VARIATIONS:

HUBERT SKINNER tells us in his epic work, ?Theintent of the authors is to present an overall survey of what it known to existfrom the pre-1870 time period. The more elaborate and distinctive designs (thosereadily recognizable off cover) are treated as fully as available recordspermit. For more ordinary simple designs (split corks, targets, grids, etc.)only a representative sampling of each is shown to illustrate the scope andvariety of what exists, and to avoid exhaustive and boring repetition.?
